Zuckerberg gate
The Zuckerberg Gate formed a small passageway through the high and late medieval defence wall on the south side of the Imperial Palace. It is still the only verifiable gate of the Hohenstaufen fortifications. The origin of the site name “Zuckerberg” is unclear. However, it is apparently not a regional peculiarity, but can also be found in many other German-speaking places. In some cases, “Zuckerberg” refers to the conical elevation in a landscape. The narrow and small-scale housing development, which can still be discovered on the inside and outside of the gate, is characteristic of the Zuckerberg area. Modest small buildings with one to four rooms were attached to the defence wall and thus contributed significantly to the preservation of the fortification up to the present day.
