Kaiserpfalz

Visitor centre and museum at the Kaiserpfalz

The Visitor Centre and Museum at the Kaiserpfalz was opened in 2004. It is located in the immediate vicinity of the Kaiserpfalz Archaeological Zone at François-Lachenal-Platz 5 and is an indispensable part of a visit to the monument.

For the permanent exhibition, employees designed the museum’s large room, which is dedicated entirely to the history of the Kaiserpfalz in Ingelheim. On display here are, among other things, the reconstruction of the Aula regia as well as numerous individual finds from the excavation campaigns since 1993, including columns, capitals, marble fragments and painted wall plaster. One of the highlights is the gold coin with the portrait of Charlemagne, which has been given to the city on permanent loan by the state. The Kaiserpfalz Research Centre curates the permanent exhibition so that new finds or findings can be quickly integrated.

Visitors can also expect further information and finds on Ingelheim’s prehistory and early history, the Roman period and the Early Middle Ages as well as special exhibitions with changing focuses. Interactive terminal presentations, digital reconstructions and information boards suitable for children vividly convey the history of Ingelheim.

The building is barrier-free. There is a cafeteria and a museum shop in the visitor centre, where tourist information, publications and souvenirs are available. You can also pick up a brochure on the historical circular route, which provides detailed information on the individual stations in the monument area. You can also borrow the multimedia eGuide, which allows you to explore the monument independently with the help of audio texts, videos and images. Alternatively, you can download the Kaiserpfalz app to your own smartphone or tablet. Panels and computer presentations in the Kaiserpfalz area provide additional information about the monument. The entrance to the Kaiserpfalz area is located to the left of the visitor centre and museum in the street „Im Saal“ (about 100 metres away).
